Ton-up” came from British slang for hitting the ton, 100 mph. In the 1950s most bikes barely managed 80, so anyone who cracked the ton, especially a woman, instantly earned respect at the Ace Cafe.

I know very little about motorbikes, but I was told by someone who knows a lot that Norton owners were often called ton up because it was the first production bike in the UK that would do 100mph 🤷🏻

I would say probably shouldn’t have an open flame that close to a bike with a fuel system full of gas but I don’t want that nice lady to beat me up

Very cool pic, but those tyres look like knobblies, so more like a trails bike than a road one, so not likely a ‘ton up’ sort of bike.
